Open invitation

Children do not dream, they image the future as something to be realized. They see in their present life how adults have problems with themselves and how they live in a world full of imperfections: unemployment, sickness, war, destruction of nature and especially lack of human warmth.
There are the children who have suffered abuse of all kinds, physically, emotionally and mentally, so that they need not merely to protect themselves differently from others but also step out of that silence which surrounds them as victims of those adults who wish to destroy the innocence of children.
Destruction of children goes hand in hand with the wish to leave no witnesses as to what took place. The philosopher Adorno speaks therefore about imaginary witnesses conveying something as to what took place into the future.
In brief, by bringing together these messages of peace painted by children and documented by video, such exhibition will show how children uphold human dignity despite all odds working against them.

Kids’ Guernica

The Kids’ Guernica is a movement which extents art education by initiating bottom-up actions based on collaborative work as part of informal learning processes. Chios will be a place to reflect upon such informal learning processes and to look at the results i.e. what messages children are sending into the future through such works.
The concept for Chios is an open invitation to show one painting by delegation of up to four children who participated. Included in the Kids’ Guernica exhibition should be documentary materials of children, in particular videos reflecting experiences and questions children have when learning how to resolve conflicts with other(s) and especially how to be socially just when doing such collaborative work.
The Kids’ Guernica / Chios event invites schools, NGOs, International Organizations, Foundations etc. dealing with children and art education:
- to provide materials to review models of informal art education
- to continue the story of Kids’ Guernica (www.kids-guernica.org )
- to further values of collaborative work e.g. social justice, honesty, fairness
- to interpret messages for the future children give to the world

Delegates are asked to bring with them at least four children so as to ensure the Chios meeting engages children at the ages 8 ? 12 and youth between13 ? 18 thereby involving children, youth and adults in a joint effort to convey messages of peace to the future.

Aims:

1.      start the Kids’Guernica in the Middle East with special focus on Lebanon
2.      prepare for the PEACE CAMP to be held in Greece either in 2007 or 2008
3.      contribute to exhibition in Barcelona Summer 2007 and in Athens, October 2007 as part of the symposium of the Network of European Cultural Capital Cities on “Productivity of Culture”
4.      link up with Chicago, USA for Kids’ Guernica in the Urban Environment
