Big Mural
Workshop in Chittagong, Bangladesh
10 May 1998-15 May 1998
ROTARY CLUB OF CHITTAGONG

Peace on earth, attachment to mankind, patriotism and culture - the KID'S GUERNICA in Bangladesh is all of that and beyond. It is articulate in conveying the artists' commitment to posterity, a silent covenant to 'Save the Earth by Love'.

The mural is the harvest of a six-day toil by forty-one children from twenty shools who otherwise represent the multitude of Bangladesh's progeny, most of whom will never hear of Picasso and lesser still of his Guernica.

The Rotary Club of Chittagong, which receivcd its charter in 1952, making it the second oldest in District 3280, organised the extraordinary assembly of children, teachers and guardians in the presence of Rotarians and representatives of the ART JAPAN NETWORK. Organised as a project of Rotary's 'International Service' one of the four avenues of service, under its president Rotarian Jasim U. Chowdhury and launched in Rotary's World Understanding Month of February, the mammoth canvas was endowed with the colours of the land at the Institute of Engineers as its venue in Chittagong the port city of Bangladesh.

The children, who were oriented from May 7-9, 1998 on the KID'S GUERNICA project with video screening of previous workshops elsewhere as well as technical advice, workd exltravaganly on the canvas from May 10-15.Inaugurated by the youngest audiance 14-month old Jaasir and attended by ART JAPAN NETWORK's Tadashi Yasuda, it was a unique workshop of talent and exuberance. It was only befitting that such an impassioned congregation and the exhibition of the work should conclude with children performing a dance recital to a large audience of five hundred.

Dainik Purbokone, a leading vernacular daily, celedrated the occasion with a special supplement, which carried messages from Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Mosharraf Hossain, ART JAPAN NETWORK's Dr. Takuya Kaneda as coordinator, Tadashi Yasuda as representative and Rotary Club of Chittagong President Rotarian Jasim U. Chowdhury. Preme Minister Sheikh Hasina has also sent message on this occasion.

Perhaps it was not an accident that nuclear tests were being carried out while the children in Chittagong were working on the mural on peace. Perhaps it highlights the need for more awakening among the children of the world because more nuclcar tests went ahead a fortnight after the children put down their painting brushes.
