CAMBODIA CHILDREN HOUSE

About 30 children took part in the KID'S GUERUNICA in Cambodia. We have finished to draw a picture on the big canvas after one week training at PoiPet ToolPonro village where children camping together in "Children's home of Cambodia".
We had little bit worry at first because most children didn't have any experience to draw a picture using various colors. So we tried to teach how to use colors and then to draw a picture freely with from a small paper to a big paper like a performance. At the begining children were just satisfied to draw a little picture on a small paper.Surprising that papers were exchanging from small one to big one, they were gradually accustomed to drawing picture on a big paper freely and easily. But everyone's picture was very similar. These children don't have any chance to see and to read picture books or comics in their daily life. These pictures show tendency drawing mountains, the sun and houses as a stereotyped. It was very difficult to explain drawing and composing a big picture on the canvas coraborating with each other. So they didn't seem to break down their own image to draw a picture that I was afraid how to convey my real idea to draw a picture more freely.
On August 21, Some volunteers arrived on the home from Japan and joined to draw pictures with children in the exercise. When I saw their pictures, children draw pictures what they wanted most and volunteers composed them very well to be unified as one picture. During the time, children seemed to be very merry anyhow. Before performance, we argued which our attitude for children was appropriate to draw picture. Someone mentioned it as good one that adult shouldn't put any pressure on children to express their own mind freely. Another pointed out that KID'S GUERNICA was a chance as we should study coraboration to finish it together. Finally we decided that best attitude for children was to offer a chance to draw a picture freely . We convinced what we needed was just support them with warmly,so during the performance we didn't say anything to them to draw freely and we observed them with various feelings. On the way of performance and before completed it, children looked it over again and added something if it were not enough to complete.I was very impressed by satisfaction of children's faces when we saw the canvas totally. They seemed to be very satisfied with completed big one.
After finished I reflected that we should have to try to bring out their spirit more fully from at the begining of exercise. I belive that we should support children's growth with appropriate way for them even how to grow up depends on each one's abilitty.
Anyhow I sincerely thank to children who came to here from a distance by walking everyday and drew with happily. So I hope to give various experience for them who don't get a chance to display of their ability inspite of their full talent.
