The first workshop - for the sketches - took place at Asselah Foundation's office: 29 Youssef Zirout boulevard, ALGER. Creativity is constantly encouraged, especially for terrorism children victims for whom workshops with a therapeutic goal opened all the year long. 15 children coming from Blida (a town 50 km far from Alger) took part in the sketching; these children were terrorism victims. As you know, Algeria has been going through grievous times during which violence has touched thousands of entire families. Asselah Foundation regards the free opening of drawing wrorkshop as a duty in order to take part into the care given to those children (Asselah Foundation was born after a tragedy : the murder of the Art School Director's : Mr Ahmed ASSELAH and of his son : Rabah, design student). 15 children coming from the neighbourhood also took part into that project. They regularly come to the Foundation in order to follow a drawing, ceramic or sculpture training. All the children were impressed by the size of the canvas and by the fact that it would travel to Japan. They were also very proud to learn that other children far abroad were involved in that project. The workshop was coordinated by members of Asselah Foundation. For room reasons, the canvas was fulfilled in Alger's Art School from 23 to 28 September 1999. The first step was to generate the children's motivation. They commented on peace, life, tolerance and above all if there was a hope for a peaceful life in their country. The first sletches were especially drawings suggesting violence : with red colors coming again and again. To questions asked by the coordinators children answered that they wanted to paint their anguish, real-life in Algeria. A lot of "extra-terrestrials" are also to be found on the sketches : beacause those who kill children can only be considered by the young victims as "beings coming from other planets". Around the canvas and also in the middle are signs : Berber signs, these signs coming from our origins are found on our carpets, trinkets and fabrics. In the middle of the canvas is violence in its different daily shapes. This is a tragic reflection of a world that is not ready yet for a carefree life, for innocence and tolerance. The nationnal flag is also there in green, white and red, as a mark of pride to be an Algerian. All around are the earth, the sun (a sign of hope) and a human face (symbol of a proud Algeria living in peace). Innocence is found again : figures of their make-believe imaginary. There is also in the middle of the canvas something like of puff of the air, a palpable tale, weaved by phosphorescent points and colours, quite dillicult to describe so much a glowing aura of optimism and of serenity is radiating... The reader teacher is : Mrs Kheira SLIMANI, accompanied by Mr Karim SERGOUA, Ramdane KACER, Lamine ASSELAH, Meriam AIT EL HARA, Nabila KHALLACHE, Samia MERZOUG and Rachida SERGOUA. Gilts (electronic games) were given by the Foundation to the children. A reception in their honour was organized with the participation of national press. |
