Kids' GUERNICA Project in Shibuya

 Art-work progression:

An enormous exciting art-work, presented herein, was held at Shibuya Ward where 69 Shibuya-residing kids and 10 artists gathered and collaborated to achieve it from March to July 2006.
The work was based on the following concept: "dynamism, body sensation and heartiness".
Such work was a very new attempt and experience not only for kids but also for artists who directed and helped the kids broaden their senses and draw out their own images on an important theme like "Peace".
To reach such a goal, duirng the extensive campus artists adopted a play-strategy to allow kids show gradually their interests for art creation, their feeling depth and body sensation. Collage, dropping and similar actions were performed as a first stage for the basic work.
As a next stage, in order to let kids accomplish their image and draw out their Picaso-Guernica canvas, lectures and discussion sessions were organized. Kids expressed themselves individually and talked out their images of Peace. "Could Peace be expressed in kids' near environment?" was among the questions that directed the kids in their sessions. School, friends, society and war were among the themes involved in the open discussions. This stage was finalized by paper-drawing group-session.
While painting the canvas moved forward slowly, the changing peace-image and art-attempt of busy-active kids appeared clearly through the sparkling colors and shapes. Junior high school students took their time painting a magnificent picture raising high over their heads their image in mind harmonizing together nature, beards, humans and big tree.
Since the first stage of this art-work piece, artists took in charge the matching of various images presented by the kids through their drawings and pictures. Some sheets of drawn papers were selected, adjusted and then combined to produce finally the art-work contained in the canvas.
Furthermore, in order to broaden kids' minds on the theme and art-work that would be performed other brain-storming group-sessions were organized where kids watched videos and benefited from similar Guernica-art-works achieved by kids world-wide. Artists also adopted various strategies for kids during the workshop in order to make their performance-time enjoyable by playing and thinking, collaborating and acting, and recognizing the objective of the art-work that would be assembled.

The artwork achieved by kids appeared full of dynamism and overflowed of originality and initiatives. The kids could feel the essence of the theme and realize the deep meaning of peace through the process of their collaborative artwork. Finally, they expressed their own existence, feeling and spirit in the visual art, which tells us the process of their creation and exalts our imagination.
The idea to start this project came up first while being in Europe where the initiator experienced various situations linked to kids' situation and decided to launch such art-work. To reach good completion and conclusions, and ensure successful end for this art-work, collaboration with other intervening partners was necessary through meetings and supports. Full cooperation with the Kids' Guernica International Committee was elaborated. Support of Shibuya Ward and sponsors from various kinds of corporations were built up. Volunteers and artists helped to manage successfully the project and direct the young-kids-artists in their wonderful work.
The completed work of Kids' Guernica Project in Shibuya was exhibited, coupled with two overseas similar art-works from Spain and Nepal, in an open public space (Tokyo Yoyogikoen Park) in Shibuya Ward on November 3 rd and 4th during the Ward Festival.
