We 6th graders of Yonabaru East Elementary School, mainly those who are in the General Study group on the topic of "Let's Send Peace Message from Yonabaru!" taking the lead, made the mural of KIDS' GUERNICA. Our Teacher recommended us to join the project, adding that our mural would go around the world. I thought, "This is now and never! We should try this!" Then my classmates and I embarked on drawing the mural of KIDS' GUERNICA. We were really surprised to see the huge canvas of 3.5m long and 7.8m wide, that almost covered the whole floor of our classroom. We decided to put our wishes for Peace into the canvas, hoping that the people watching this might think,"No more war! We should keep Peace!" Then we gathered, discussed, and found out what we would draw on the canvas. Naturally, the themes of the mural turned out to be the best parts of Okinawa and of Yonabaru, and , of course, World Peace. When I thought about peace, the word reminded me of Himeyuri (Lily)Girls, and I guessed Lilies must be on the mural. At World War II, the girl students of Himeyuri, together with Japanese troops, had very sad, desperate experiences, many of who died. After the talks, we decided to draw Shyuri-Castle, a big tug-war, Eisah Dance Yambaru Ship, Hibiscus,an animal statue called Seasah, shellflower, coral tree, Lilies, Fish, Corals and so on, and I was going to draw Lilies and the Bird flying over Shyuri-Castle toward the future. As I couldn't paint the petals of the Lilies with good balance, I had to paint them over and over. And I found it difficult to put shades under the Lilies to come out. I was totally at a loss when Mr. Inamine and our Teacher Akemi gave me advices. Thanks to them, I still remember how glad I felt at the time that I had finished drawing the Lilies. Each of us finished one after another, and finally our mural was completed on the 13th of July. Now we know we can do whatever it is if we cooperate. We even hope that we are able to aim at more difficult goal next time! It was a great experience to join the KIDS' GUERNICA!
