Workshop in Korea
28 October - 31 October 1995
INCHON NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION

ART JAPAN

The Workshop in Inchon, Korea, was held from 28 October to 1 November and coordinated by Dr. Chai-Woo Ro, a professor emeritus of the Inchon National University of Education. Inchon, where the University is located, is a port town next to Seoul. It is well Known as the town where the Allies landed at the Korean War and now it is developing as a metropolitan gateway of the sea and sky routes.
This workshop was supported by the Kaeyang-ku Inchon Education Board. The work was instructed by Mr. Kim Il soo, Chairman of the Society for Northern Elementary Education and other teachers. After several meetings at the Society, it was decided that each one child should be chosen from the elementary schools in the North. The children got together in each area after school to discuss the theme of the mural work and peace and at the same time they were given some instruction on the colors and drawings. They learned the history of invasion to their country while they worked on the mural, which interested them to the internationalization and the world peace.
Thirty-two children participated in the workshop and they worked over two weeks including the preparation period. The central theme of the workshop was set as 'Our peace starts with unification of the North and the South'. Other messages were also expressed in the work, such as 'We will advance towards the peace hand in hand' and 'the future of children who will be leaders of the twenty-first century'.
Dr. Chai-Woo Ro's concept of instruction is 'children-oriented'. Children first draw their images along the theme. Then they place those images on the mural as they discuss keeping the completed mural in mind. In this workshop, it was intended that the children gain confidence in effectiveness and power of their expressions their collaboration work would bring about.
Their motions consist in 'children in the world hand in hand', 'a train travelling around the world', 'the gate oh peace', 'peace in mind', 'individual's freedom', 'wealth of life', 'the earth', 'the Korean Peninsula', 'the Pacific rim', 'a dove', 'Admiral Shun Sin Lee', 'General Unchi Muntuk' and so on. The last two characters express symbolic heroes of the country who saved the Korean Peninsula from invasions.
