Kids' Guernica is a project devised by Kyoto-based cultural organisation, Art Japan, involving children from around the world painting messages of peace on a canvas which is the same size as Picasso's Guernica. There are already more than 15 works in the world, and the city of Malakoff, which is a member of the World Conference of Mayors through the French Association of Peace & Local Government, participated in the project. With the assistance of the Pompidou Center, this work was created by the third year students of Ms Neale at Henri Barbusse Primary School, between 15 November and 10 December, 1999.
At the end of January, the work on display at the Malakoff City Hall will join the 15 works already created in various countries. Then, in July, 2000, all the works will be displayed at a summit to be held in Okinawa, Japan, and then exhibited in Nepal in December, 2000. Kids' Guernica is also introduced in Japanese textbooks.
Kids' Guernica workshops will also be held in Japan and India during the year 2000.
The children created the work using sponges, sticks, spatulas, etc., on a white canvas divided into four, using lines and symbols which they had devised themselves. They completed a work that is, just like a newspaper article, a record of their view of reality. More than just a black, white and grey picture, it is a work which leaves one with a strong message of desire for peace.
