Big Mural
Workshop in Santiago, Chile
25 November 1999 - 30 November 1999
LICEO EXPERIMENTAL ARTISTICO

ART JAPAN

The workshop was held at the Liceo Expermental Artistico which is a school that focuses especially on the creative behavior of its students. Creativity and imagination are highly and permanently encouraged in them, so these children have special skills for developing art works. The workshop lasted 6 days, from November 25 untill November 30 of the summer of the year 1999. 38 children participated in the main sketches, but actually all the children in the school (around 60) made at least one brushstroke on the canbas, so they felt is was a great project that involved the whole school spirit. The workshop was coordinated by the Extension Schoolof the children in the Catholic University in the capital of Chile; the city of Santiago. The leader teacher was Ms. Rosa Alburquenque accompanied by Ms. Laura Huichaman, Ms. Gabriela Mora and Mr. Benito Pena. The first step was to generate the children's motivation on the issue. They commented on life, humanity and about living in hormoniy and peace. Then they made sletches with images suggesting peace and violence according to thier own understanding of the world. These images were constructed through the protagonism of the Larin American identity. The main figure of the mural was a kind of dragon or long snake resembling the geography our long and narrow country. The head of the dragon was at the north of Chile (which is a desert) accompanied by figures that characterize the culture of that area (cactus, dancing rituals with special masks, churches) and warm colors were located to the scenery. The central part of the mural corresponded to images related to the indigenous inhabitants of our country, our origins. They are called Mapuches, and are represented by human figures, the earth, the sun, the moon, birds, etc. Towards the end of the mural, the southern part of Chile which is more like a jungle full of vegetation, colors in the mural become blue and green, generating an atmosphere of peace. The main fugures are mermaids, gods of the sea and others. (Written by Daniela Rosenfeld)
