The children of Amami Minami Elementary School study for the Peace every year.
6 graders go on a school excursio to Hiroshima to finish the study. They visit the Archive or go out for the Atomic bomb victims' talks to know how deeply these people hope for peace.
They spent two months before the excursion doing a lot of activities:studying about the history of the war, interviewing the elders in the area, making a expression exercise, "The Heart of Hiroshima" in the athletic meeting and this expression by painting KIDS' GUERNICA mural.
Their joining KIDS' GUERNICA started with the fact that their teacher happened to see the children in Sri Lanka producing the Peace Mural. Listening to her, 118 of 6 graders began to say," We want to paint it, too!" Having the exchange with students who paid short time visits there from SriLanka, they started to have communications over-seas with the children in Sri Lanka by sending them letters or stationery in need.
" We want no more war on the earth and shake hands with the people of every country."
" We want to live happily together with animals" With those wishes, they tried the collaborative production.
At first they tried to express their own minds on the pieces of regular drawing paper. Afterwards, their representatives had talks about the composition of the mural based upon their all ideas. They finished two murals, one of which is supposed to go to Nepal. The other is to remain at their school as a graduation memorial so that every student or parent take a look at it! On one are the people all over the world hand in hand with the animals on the earth, and on the other are the peole, animals and the buildings with a symbolic big pegean flying over them.
After dividing the drawings among them, they worked on the mural everyday.
It took them 2 weeks to finish this, but they could cooperate to do this. (MATSUSHITA Kazuyo) |
