Big Mural
Workshop in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina
November, 2001
at Primary School gHridh in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Pupils of the third (III) class from Sarajevo shared their ideas and skills to create the painting. Before the beginning of this project, the children had a clear definition of the message they wished to send. I ask that you pay particular attention to our interpretation of the painting:The painting requires deep reflection, for every part of it, including its colors, carries a strong message from Sarajevo. At the center of the painting is a seashell which, as a symbol, is not connected with any specific area or any specific nation. The seashell holding the earth shows the earthfs full beauty in blue and green, which will remain so only if we make the effort to protect it. The blue color in the painting expresses our feelings of freedom; wide and endless. Each of the pictures encircling the carves is a concept of one of the children. These concepts are connected to the Kidsf Guernica project. The drawing of the Egyptian pyramid and the Eiffel Tower, which are connected by the Old Bridge in Mostar, sends a message that Bosnia-Herzegovina is contributing and cohesive part of the world.
You will notice that the spaceship and astronaut are not complete. This message portrays unexplored space and the sense that we should turn to the future rather than the past, and perhaps one day we will find that we are not alone.
The children holding hands are not fully dressed. This alludes to the less fortunate children of the world, some of which lived through the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and we wish only happiness and good health to them.

Moreover, the entire composition sits on a pedestal made up of the childrenfs handprints. The future of our planet lies within our children, and they would like to see less war, more tolerance and more understanding among the peoples of the world.(Reported by Mujan Alisa, Teacher)
