THE BORDEAUX capcMUSEUM

ART JAPAN

The Bordeaux capcMuseumis located in the middle of Bordeaux City which is three hours south from Paris by TGV. Bordeaux is an old capital well known for its wine and still keeps a lot of old stone buildings. This museum was originally a storehouse for wine. Local residents are encouraged to preserve this timeworn historical building and it was refurbished and revived as a museum of contemporary art in 1973. Its appearance still remains stately but the interior has been remodeled completely to a modern one. It has a large well hole exhibition space for contemporary art on the ground and the first floors, offices and a library on the second floor, and a space for 'Children's Atelier' on the third floor.
There is a workshop on every Wednesday at the 'Children's Atelier'. Dominique BEAUFRERE a curator in charge of museum education, is responsible for these workshops. He tries to link contemporary art with educational activities for children. When children in Bordeaux visit the museum to see the permanent collection or an exhibition, a gallery talk or a workshop will be given so that they can learn the production process of contemporary art. There are also opportunities for children to meet and talk directly to the artist.
The workshop for 'KIDS' GUERNICA' was started at the beginning of November 1995 as part of the activities at the 'children's atelier'. Fifteen children from elementary and junior high schools participated in this workshop. They first discussed peace and examined the composition of the mural. Children's ideas were valued and the discussion continued each week at a slow pace. As the museum specializes in contemporary art, the finished work contains different characters from the works of other countries.
Children drew the images of good things and bad things for peace freely on the cards. They collected the cards and discussed again. It resulted in a composition just like a traffic sign. The colors and the composition look very simple but they sketched again and again and had valuable discussions to decide which sketches to adopt.
