In the Summer of 1996, Japan's third "KIDS' GUERNICA" project was held under the title, "Send a message from Kobe to the world: The International Children's Peace Mural."
Kobe, as many will recall, suffered greatly when a major earthquake struck the city center on January 16,1995. Over 200,000 homes and buildings were destroyed and about 6,000 people were killed. Support and encouragement was received from all over the world, and with this the city has begun to rebuild itself and people's lives have somewhat returned to normal.
For the "KIDS' GUERNICA" project, the children of Kobe also came together with all their hearts and gathered with a number of school teachers, University students, and family members at the Faculty of Human Development of Kobe University , overlooking the port.
Organized by Akira Higashiyama and Mikio Suzuki, both professors of Kobe University, a total of 35 young artists ranging in age from 9 to 15 years old, and 22 assistants took part.
Under the direction of one of the Junior High School students, the children decided to combine a number of their paintings under 4 themes such as World Peace, International Friendship, Environment, and Introducing Kobe and Japan to the world. Seagulls in Kobe's port, Himeji Castle, a festival and other images were brought together in 25 circles. One of the circles has the words "Love and Peace" in it, symbolizing the earth, the hope of the young, inspired artists, and indeed the hopes of all of us everywhere around the globe.
