Workshop in Yamanashi, Japan
2003.2
Kosai junior high school

In October 2002, Mr. Kaneda’s words led us to take part in this project. Mr. Kaneda came to our school and spoke about world peace. He is a member of Kid’s Guernica project, and works at Otsuma-Joshi University. He told us that many children in the world painted murals for world peace. Hearing that was very surprising and inspiring. Before we could begin our activity we had many things to consider.
Firstly, we each had different personalities. This led to 184 kinds of ideas. So we discussed and discussed some more about world peace. After a long time, we decided to paint our three images of world peace in a three section mural (Please look at our pictures).

During these activities, many changes took place in our hearts. At first, we thought we understood world peace. Soon after though, we noticed that we did not fully understand the concept. So we continued on with our activity of discussing world peace. Finally, we became aware of how very important it is and that we have to do something.

Our first painting is in regards to our determinedness. It shows our eyes and faces and means “Don’t be indifferent to world peace”. The next painting (“Stop the wars for our future. Work hard for world peace.”), show our strong wills with a big tree and many beautiful flowers. The last section shows our hopes. (“Don’t repeat the terrible wars. Eliminate them all over the world.”)

On the left side of the third mural section, there is a bud on the wasteland. The bud appears on the mine. The mine and the wasteland represent, the symbol of foolish persons, and the bud is a representation of our hopes. In the center, there are two kinds of human beings. One is selfish and the other works for all. On the right hand side, there is a big tree growing on the mine. That tree grows up to the blue sky. This is called “Jirai no ki (The mine tree)” by us. This big tree shows our wishes and the blue sky our future. This tree is us and our message of peace in the world.

By doing these activities we were able to recognize the difference between our personal wishes and the wishes of the group. As we worked our ties as friends strengthened and our egos were set aside. Painting the mural brought us “peace”. This activity also made us take notice of and feel “peace”.

While painting these pictures we were also thinking about how to send our message of peace to the world. We thought about the many ways to express it. We decided to the best way for us to display our message was through drawings, poems, speeches, and songs in our school gym. All the students and teachers, our families, people of Yamanashi, and even Mr. Kaneda from Tokyo came to our assembly. We sincerely delivered our message. Newspapers even commented that it was great. We were very happy and thankful for all the people’s support.
